Vata Dosha: Air + Ether


Are you that imaginative, enthusiastic, full of energy person? Do you thrive in music, dance, writing, and everything creative? Do you love travelling, coming up with new ideas, and thinking outside the box? Then, chances are you are mostly a Vata dosha. And what does that mean? Keep reading to find out!



Vata is like the wind. It is comprised of air and space, so it represents movement, change, speed, and instability.


The qualities of Vata are cold, fast, thin, rough, moving, unstable, dry, light, agile, and expanding. Therefore, Vata is the dosha that rules the Autumn season, which shares these very same characteristics.

It takes care of movement in your body, with functions such as blood circulation, breathing, elimination, or the nervous system. It is placed in the colon, bones, and head.

Physically, Vata people are lean, with long limbs, delicate bones, and joints that often crack. They have dry skin and hair, with brittle nails and thin gums.


They are either very short or very tall, like a model or a ballerina, and their appetite is completely changeable (sometimes strong, sometimes weak). Vatas love movement and exercise, but they can go long periods skipping workouts because they are just too busy with other things.

When in balance, Vata people are extremely creative. They love thinking outside the box and coming up with new ideas. They enjoy mental stimulation and get bored easily, so they need constant change and keep jumping from one thing to another (hence the one hundred tabs open in the computer).


Vatas love to talk and communicate and are the best motivational speakers, communicators, writers, musicians, artists, painters, chefs, dancers, travel bloggers, philosophers, or psychologists.


They tend to be very spiritual people and are more connected with their higher chakras (throat, third eye, and crown chakras).


Vatas love the beginning of things, and they always have lots of ideas and projects running at the same time. However, they often get bored or overwhelmed before completing them or bringing them into life.


Hence, they need to pick up one thing and don't switch to the next one before completing the first task.


They have lots of energy, but it comes in waves, and they tend to push too much and over exhaust themselves, feeling depleted, and fatigued.

It is the dosha that needs quality sleep, meditation and rest the most, although it is very challenging for Vatas to sit still and quiet their thoughts.



When imbalanced, they are prone to overthinking, excess worrying, chaos, anxiety, restlessness, insomnia, fear, lack of focus, feeling overwhelmed, and blaming themselves for all of their problems.


Physically imbalanced Vatas can suffer from constipation, bloating, gas, digestive issues, excess thirst, dryness, fatigue, loss of appetite, weight loss, tingling, palpitations, muscle cramps, fragile bones, arthritis, joint pain, cavities, and lung problems.

Of all three doshas, Vata is the one that gets out of balance more easily. So even if it’s not your primary dosha, make sure that you keep it at bay by eating warm home-cooked food, taking adequate rest, and practising meditation.
