Ayurvedic Strawberry Smoothie

A creamy, delicious strawberry smoothie that is vegan, sugar-free, and low-carb. Thanks to my secret ingredient and the addition of spices, it balances all three doshas, and it will keep you full for hours. Add your favorite toppings and you have an awesome breakfast or snack in a matter of minutes!

Every year when the weather starts getting warm, I change my sweet bread and muffin breakfasts for fruit-based ones.

However, as much as I love eating a whole bowl of strawberries with cardamom first thing in the morning, I know that I will have to come back for more food in an hour.

Not the best plan when you want to go out for a walk in nature or have a bunch of things to do.

So usually, I do not drink smoothies because of three reasons:

  • They don't fill me up enough to keep my strong Vata-Pitta metabolism at bay.

  • They are usually made with raw fruits and vegetables, which makes them difficult to digest.

  • I don't like the overpowering banana taste that most of the smoothies have.

Luckily, Ayurveda came to the rescue and I figured out a solution that overcomes these three challenges. This smoothie bowl:

  • It is full of fiber, low-carb, and packed with protein and healthy fats that keep your hunger levels away. The addition of toppings also adds more sustenance if you are a truly hungry human (like me in the mornings).

  • It does not contain any raw veggies and only a little fruit, so it doesn't disturb our digestive fire. Plus, the Ayurvedic spices aid in the digestion process and help regulate your blood sugar.

  • No banana is needed to achieve its dreamy creamy texture. This means that there's no banana flavor, and it has a lower glycemic index.

This Ayurvedic smoothie bowl is an amazing snack, breakfast, or even dessert also for those on keto, paleo, or low-carb diets. It balances all three doshas because it is quite neutral, but feel free to adjust the spices or fruits according to your needs.

So maybe, if your Pitta is a bit increased, you might want to substitute the strawberries with mango or another sweet fruit and omit the ginger.

Ayurvedic Strawberry Smoothie

(1 bowl)

1 C chopped strawberries

1 small zucchini, cooked and cooled (roasted, steamed, etc.)

1 Tbsp coconut butter (omit for Kapha)

1/2 tsp cinnamon

1/4 tsp cardamom

Pinch of ground ginger

Non-dairy milk, or water

Optional add-ins:

1 scoop plant-based vanilla protein powder

1 Tbsp hemp seeds

1 tsp moringa powder

1/2 tsp Ashwagandha

Toppings: sliced strawberries, sugar-free granola, coconut butter, hemp seeds, etc.

  1. Blend all the ingredients except the toppings, adding the non-dairy milk (or water) until you reach the desired consistency. Add more liquid if you want to drink it, and less if you want to eat it with a spoon.

  2. Pour the smoothie in a beautiful bowl (or glass), and add your toppings of choice. This time I topped it with sugar-free chocolate granola, sliced strawberries, and coconut butter, but you could also add hemp seeds, chia seeds, cacao nibs, coconut flakes, etc.

  3. Enjoy!
